Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a kitchen remodel in Torrance and want Schluter waterproofing or uncoupling membrane systems as part of the build, a full kitchen remodel with Schluter components installed typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on kitchen size, cabinet grade, countertop selection, and how much waterproofing the project needs. We stock and install Schluter Kerdi membrane, Kerdi-Band, Ditra underlayment, and Schluter edge profiles for Torrance kitchens, which means you’re not waiting on a special order before we can start the tile portion of your job. Most Torrance homeowners call us after a previous contractor cut corners on waterproofing, or after a leak near the sink or dishwasher warped the subfloor and they want that mistake corrected the right way. The tell-tale sign something’s failing is tile grout that keeps cracking along the counter line, or a soft spot in the floor in front of the sink that you can feel through the vinyl or tile.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To
Schluter makes a few different systems, and they’re not interchangeable, which trips up a lot of Torrance homeowners trying to buy their own materials. The Ditra membrane is an uncoupling layer that goes under floor tile; it lets the subfloor and tile move independently so that minor slab movement in Southern California doesn’t crack grout lines. The Kerdi membrane is a waterproofing layer for walls, shower benches, and anywhere water hits tile; Kerdi-Band bridges seams and corners. The third category is Schluter edge profiles (Schiene, Jolly, Rondec) – metal trim that finishes the raw tile edge where backsplash meets countertop or where a tiled wall ends. To identify what you have, look at the edge of any exposed membrane: Schluter materials are bright orange and printed with the product name in black. If you don’t see a name, it’s either a knockoff or a generic mortar-based solution that behaves differently under expansion and contraction. For Torrance homes, we prefer genuine Schluter Ditra and Kerdi because the coastal humidity and occasional slab shifts we see near the Del Amo corridor punish shortcuts – aftermarket “uncoupling” mats often lack the drainage channels and dovetail anchoring that make Ditra hold tile flat for decades.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracks running in a straight line across the floor. This usually means the tile was set directly over plywood or concrete with no uncoupling layer, so the substrate movement is transferring straight into the grout. Schluter Ditra exists to prevent exactly this failure pattern.
- A soft or hollow-feeling floor in front of the sink or dishwasher. Water has gotten under the tile and rotted the subfloor. If Kerdi waterproofing wasn’t installed at the kickplate and cabinet-to-floor transitions, this is where it starts.
- Dark staining or efflorescence creeping up the bottom of the backsplash. That white, chalky mineral deposit means water is wicking behind the tile. Schluter Kerdi behind the sink wall and along countertop seams would have stopped this before it started.
- Loose or lifting edge profiles at the counter-to-backsplash transition. If the Schluter strip is pulling away, the thin-set underneath failed – usually because the wrong mortar type was used. Schluter profiles require unmodified thin-set over Kerdi, and modified thin-set over Ditra, and mixing those up is the most common install mistake we fix in Torrance.
- Tile tenting upward at a seam in the floor. Tenting means the tile had no room to expand, so the whole floor is pressing against itself. Ditra gives tile the lateral freedom it needs, especially in Torrance kitchens that get direct afternoon sun through a west-facing window and experience wide daily temperature swings.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A full Schluter-equipped kitchen remodel in Torrance runs $14,000 – $45,000, and we write the price before any work starts. A smaller galley kitchen with stock KraftMaid cabinets, a mid-grade Silestone or Cambria countertop, and new Schluter Ditra under the floor tile might land around $14,000 – $20,000. A larger kitchen with custom island, full Kerdi waterproofing behind the sink wall, upgraded countertops, and replacement of water-damaged subfloor runs $28,000 – $45,000. What drives the range: square footage of tile, whether we’re repairing failed substrate or starting clean, cabinet grade you choose, and how much of the existing flooring has to come out. Every quote includes the Schluter membrane, thin-set, tile labor, edge profiles, demolition and haul-away, and our one-year 365-Day Done Right Promise – if anything we installed fails within 365 days of completion, we fix it at no cost. You get a written price before we start, and that price doesn’t change mid-job.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check whether your existing tile was set over an orange Schluter membrane by pulling a floor vent or looking under the dishwasher kickplate – if you see bright orange plastic, you have Ditra. You can inspect the grout line where the backsplash meets the counter for cracks coming from the corner. But pulling up tile, removing rotted subfloor, installing Kerdi membrane with proper overlap, and mortaring Schluter edge profiles is not a weekend job, and mistakes with waterproofing don’t show up for a year or two, when the water damage is already done. We’ve pulled more than one Torrance kitchen apart where a homeowner followed a YouTube tutorial and found black mold behind the tile because the membrane overlaps were wrong. If you’re on the fence, call us at (424) 337-6939 and we’ll tell you over the phone whether this is something you can handle or something you should leave alone. Estimates are free.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter Ditra floor and Kerdi waterproofed wall in a Torrance kitchen should last 30 – 50 years, because the systems are designed to outlast the tile itself and withstand the mild seasonal movement and coastal humidity we get here. What fails early is the tile or grout, not the membrane. Call (424) 337-6939 if you want us to inspect what’s under your existing floor and tell you honestly what you’re working with.
Sometimes yes – if the failure is isolated to one section of floor or one wall behind the sink, we can demo that area, install new Schluter membrane with proper overlap, and retile just the affected section. We’ll tell you after looking at it whether a patch will hold or whether the moisture has spread far enough that a larger replacement makes sense. The inspection is free, and the written quote covers whichever path we recommend.
For a standard Torrance kitchen with Ditra under the floor tile and Kerdi behind the sink wall, the Schluter installation and tile work typically takes 4 – 7 working days, depending on tile size and whether we’re repairing rotted subfloor underneath. The full kitchen remodel, including cabinets and counters, runs 2 – 6 weeks total, and we give you a schedule in writing before we start.
We keep Schluter Ditra, Kerdi, Kerdi-Band, and the most common Schiene and Jolly edge profiles stocked in our Torrance inventory, so the tile portion of your project doesn’t wait on a supplier. If you need an unusual profile size or finish, we can source it from Schluter distributors in the Los Angeles area within a few days. Call (424) 337-6939 and we’ll check availability while you’re on the phone.
