Quikrete Fence Installation: The Torrance Owner’s Guide

Quikrete fence installation in Torrance typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a standard residential project, and we stock Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix on our trucks for same-week post setting. The most common way homeowners discover a problem is leaning posts after winter rains soften the soil around the base, or a gate that starts dragging because the post concrete cracked below grade. If you’re looking at a fence that’s listing toward your neighbor’s yard or a post you can wiggle with one hand, the concrete footing has failed, not the post itself, and that’s a straightforward fix.

We’re an independent contractor in Torrance, not affiliated with Quikrete, but we install their concrete products on fence jobs every month. What surprises most homeowners is that the concrete rarely fails first. It’s usually the original post hole that was dug too shallow for our expansive clay soil, which heaves and shifts through Torrance’s wet-dry cycles. Quikrete mix itself, when poured at the right depth, holds up for decades.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

This page covers fence installation using Quikrete’s concrete products, most commonly Fast-Setting Concrete Mix (the gray bag, No. 1004) and their standard Concrete Mix (No. 1101). Fast-Setting is the right choice for fence posts because it sets in 20 to 40 minutes and doesn’t require premixing, you pour it dry into the hole and add water. For corner posts and gate posts, which carry more load, we sometimes spec the standard Concrete Mix for a denser pour.

The compatibility gotcha we see regularly: homeowners buy Quikrete Crack-Resistant Concrete Mix (No. 1006) thinking it’s stronger for fence posts. It’s not wrong, but it’s overkill for a post footing and costs more per bag. One 50-pound bag of Fast-Setting Mix sets one 4×4 post at a 10-inch diameter hole about 2 feet deep. For a 6-foot privacy fence in Torrance, we plan on 2 to 3 bags per post depending on hole diameter, and we prefer 2.5 to 3 feet of depth because our frost line is negligible but our soil movement is not.

As for OEM versus aftermarket, there’s no such thing as aftermarket Quikrete. The brand matters because their mix ratios are consistent bag to bag. Cheap bagged concrete from a no-name supplier can have inconsistent aggregate and unpredictable set times, which means a post can be visibly crooked the next morning. We use Quikrete on every fence job unless the homeowner specifically requests something else.

Signs Your Quikrete Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Leaning posts after rain. Torrance gets about 14 inches of rain a year, almost all of it in a few winter storms. When the soil around a post saturates, the post leans because the footing was too shallow or too narrow, not because the concrete cracked. The fix is digging out and repouring at proper depth.
  • Gate dragging on the latch side. This almost always means the gate post has shifted out of plumb. A gate post carries dynamic load every time the gate swings, and a shallow footing will loosen within a few years. We set gate posts at least 3 feet deep with a wider hole than line posts.
  • Visible cracking at the base of the post, at ground level. Concrete doesn’t bond to wood. What looks like the concrete failing is usually the post itself rotting below grade, a Torrance-specific problem where irrigation overspray keeps the base wet. The Quikrete is fine. The post needs replacement, and we wrap the new one in a post sleeve before pouring.
  • Fence wobble when you push on it. If the post moves inside the concrete, the original installer may have poured the mix too wet, which reduces compressive strength. Quikrete Fast-Setting Mix should be poured dry and watered in stages, not premixed into a slurry.
  • Concrete heaving up out of the ground. This is expansive clay soil doing what it does. When it dries out after a wet season, it shrinks and cracks, and lightweight footings can get pushed upward. It’s less common in Torrance than in inland areas, but we see it in neighborhoods near the Madrona Marsh and along the Beryl Street corridor where soil composition varies.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

Quikrete fence installation in Torrance runs $3,500 to $9,000 depending on fence length, post depth, and how much of the old footing needs demolition. A shorter run of 30 to 40 linear feet with straightforward access lands on the lower end. A full backyard perimeter with gate posts, corner posts, and old concrete to break out pushes toward the top of the range.

That price includes the Quikrete bags, post sleeves or new posts as needed, disposal of the old concrete and posts, and our written price before any work begins. You get a line-item breakdown so you know exactly what the bags cost, what labor costs, and what the haul-away fee is. There’s no verbal estimate that grows later, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you. We also pull permits where they’re required, which in Torrance generally applies when the fence exceeds 6 feet or sits on a corner lot with visibility requirements.

DIY or Call Us?

Mixing Quikrete is not dangerous. Digging post holes in Torrance clay, on the other hand, is where DIY fence projects go sideways. A 3-foot hole through compacted clay with hand tools is a full day’s work for two posts, and if you hit utility lines or a hardpan layer, you’re stuck. Calling 811 for utility marking is free and required by law, but most DIYers skip it and then wonder why the gas line is suddenly visible at the bottom of their hole.

What we’d tell a friend: you can safely reset one post in a weekend if you have a post-hole digger, a level, and a strong back. What you cannot safely do is dig around a post on a shared property line without knowing where the utility easement runs, or remove a concrete footing that was poured around a root system. Those are the jobs where we show up, read the site in ten minutes, and give you a number. Call (424) 337-6939 and we’ll come take a look before you spend a weekend fighting clay.
